SFG President Presides Over Emergency Cabinet Meeting

The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia held an extraordinary session today to discuss the overall security situation in the country, recent military operations, and key political developments.

The meeting focused on the progress made by the Somali National Army in its ongoing fight against extremist groups, which has resulted in significant victories.

The Council also reviewed the recent local council elections in the Banadir region, which were successfully conducted in the capital, marking a milestone in Somalia’s democratic process.

The session was chaired by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and attended by the Prime Minister, His Excellency Hamza Abdi Barre. President Mohamud delivered a detailed briefing on the state of the nation, highlighting both the challenges and progress achieved.

He commended the Council for their active role in ensuring the successful conduct of the one-person, one-vote elections in Mogadishu on 25 December 2025, which he described as a historic achievement. The President emphasized that many had doubted the feasibility of holding such elections, making their completion a landmark moment for Somalia’s democratic transition.

During the meeting, President Mohamud also addressed recent direct threats to the nation’s sovereignty. He highlighted the government’s effective diplomatic response to these challenges, which has yielded tangible results in safeguarding national interests.

The President urged the Council to approach the country’s defense and security challenges collectively, stressing the importance of unity, consultation, and coordinated action among government institutions. He further encouraged the ministers to continue prioritizing service to the Somali people, promoting cooperation and solidarity in all national endeavors.

The Council of Ministers approved two major agreements aimed at strengthening national security and enhancing cooperation with friendly countries:

  1. A Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Somalia and Uganda on security cooperation.

  2. A Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Somalia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on maritime transport collaboration.

In addition, the Council ratified several key legislative proposals and policies to support governance, legal frameworks, and national development:

  1. Evidence Legislation, which outlines the procedures for handling and presenting legal evidence.

  2. The 1978 International Convention on Training Standards and Certification for the Protection of Refugees.

  3. The Law on the Establishment of the Somali Maritime Institute, aimed at developing Somalia’s maritime expertise and capabilities.

  4. Regulations under the Data Protection Law, ensuring the security and privacy of personal information.

  5. Somalia’s National Policy on Persons with Disabilities, designed to promote inclusion and equal access to services.

Finally, the Council received an update from the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, His Excellency Dahir Shire Mohamed, regarding the upcoming commencement of oil production activities in the country. The session also included a briefing from the National Disaster Management Authority (SODMA) on the current drought situation, highlighting the need for continued coordination and response efforts to support affected communities.

The extraordinary session underscored the government’s commitment to national security, democratic governance, and sustainable development. The Council of Ministers reaffirmed its resolve to work collaboratively in addressing the country’s challenges while advancing initiatives that strengthen Somalia’s institutions, infrastructure, and international partnerships.
