Banadir Region local council elections announced and denounced by candidates

The results of the Banadir Region local council elections were officially announced on 31 December 2025, triggering strong reactions from several political organizations and independent candidates. While the announcement marked the conclusion of a key local electoral process in Somalia’s capital region, it also exposed deep divisions among contestants regarding the credibility and transparency of the vote.

Members from multiple political organizations who competed for seats in the Banadir local council publicly denounced the results, alleging corruption and unfair practices. Some candidates said they invested significant effort and resources in their campaigns but failed to gain expected representation in the council or appointments as district commissioners. As a result, many expressed disappointment and said they had lost hope in the fairness of the political process.

Several candidates further claimed that the election lacked legal legitimacy, arguing that Banadir Region does not have a fully empowered national supreme court or electoral judicial body to rule on disputes arising from the election. According to them, this institutional gap makes it difficult to challenge alleged irregularities through legal channels, raising concerns about accountability and rule of law in local governance.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral Commission defended the process, stating that the results were presented two days earlier and reflected a free and fair election that satisfied many political organizations and individuals. However, public rumors suggesting that the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) inked to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Banadir Mayor Mohamed Hussein won more than 50 percent of the votes, has fueled ongoing debate, with critics questioning voter integrity and alleging possible corruption, claims that authorities have not officially confirmed.
