Laascaanood, July 30, 2025 – A conference aimed at uniting the people of SSC-Khaatumo and Maakhir into a regional state has concluded with the decision to name the new entity the “Northeast Somalia State.”
During the conference, delegates unanimously approved the constitution of the Northeast Somalia State, along with its flag (comprising green, blue, and white colors, a star, and a horse). The state’s boundaries, capital, and fundamental laws for its governance were also formally designated.
The first phase of the Northeast Somalia State’s formation conference concluded peacefully tonight. The Federal Government of Somalia is actively accelerating all efforts to facilitate the establishment of this administration, with 417 delegates representing the local population in attendance.
The Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has praised this crucial step, highlighting its significance in strengthening the country’s federalization and democracy. Many in the Somali community have also welcomed the formation of the new Northeast Somalia State.
Reactions from Puntland and Somaliland
Conversely, politicians speaking on behalf of the Puntland and Somaliland administrations have condemned this development, describing it as regrettable. They have accused the Federal Government of interference and a blatant violation of their respective administrations and the self-governance of the local populations.
Upcoming Phases,
The conference will now proceed to its second and third phases, where the delegates will select members of parliament. The new administration is expected to soon elect its various leaders at the parliamentary, presidential, and ministerial levels. These leaders will then undertake the task of building an administration similar to other regional states within Somalia that are part of the federal government.
